Well, times are a changin'! Librarians are finding unique ways to fund unique seating, desks, technological tools, makerspaces, and many other innovative add-ons for a school library. I've even heard of high school libraries with espresso/coffee machines (ideal)! Today's students are able to access very comfortable learning spaces in these new and improved libraries. For one of my earlier Longwood classes, I visited George Mason University library and was A-MAZED! at the transformation of the library spaces -- such comfy chairs, lounges, techy meeting rooms, and so many other awesome learning experiences. It was so much different than when I attended University classes a couple of decades ago.
The librarian at my former school is setting trends in Orange County, Florida by transforming her high school library with unique seating, high top desks with power options, gaming consoles, Makerspaces, and so many other ideas. Her inspiration and the visit to GMU has piqued my interest in transforming a library that I work in upon completion of my degree.
Here is a link you may find of interest for transforming your very own library space! If you read towards the end of the article, you will see our very own Carl Harvey featured in the article. So many great things here! I love the idea of the gaming station, but whew...I have no budget for that level of toys yet!
ReplyDeleteI love how the school library is making the library space more user friendly. It seems strange to me to actually promote gaming in the library when a few years ago we were telling students to stop playing games on the computer! One way "my" library is keeping up is that they sell hot chocolate in the winter and lemonade in the spring - this is super popular with the students.
